If you see a tiny white bubble or a foggy edge near the gas cap or fender tips, that's the clear coat deciding it's had enough of the basecoat and wanting to go its separate way. Once that clear lifts, the pigment underneath is defenseless against the elements.

Restoration Tip

Listen to your local salty painter on this one: seal your chips the second you see them. On a 2000-model bike, a small rock chip isn't just an eyesore; it's a breach in the clear coat's armor. Because this era is prone to delamination, you need to use a touch-up system to "lock down" the edges of the damage immediately. Don't just dab some color on and call it a day-you need to ensure the clear coat is sealed so moisture and oxygen can't crawl under the edges and start peeling the finish off in sheets. If you're working with the Big Blue Tricoat, take your time with the mid-coat layers; tricoats are about building depth, not just covering a spot.
