How to Find Your 2001 Harley-Davidson's Color Code

A color code is unlikely to appear on a Harley Davidson; often only the color name is listed. The code can be determined by Harley-Davidson. If there is no color code, the relevant reference is the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number. Finding a code on the bike is uncommon, so identification typically relies on Harley-Davidson or, failing a code, the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) formula.

2001 Harley-Davidson Background Info

The 2001 Harley-Davidson Vibe

Welcome to 2001: the year the V-Rod was born and the "Fat Boy" was still the king of the boulevard. Harley was feeling adventurous with their palette, offering 15 different shades that moved away from the neon madness of the 90s and into a more sophisticated, "tech-heavy" look. We're talking about high-end finishes like Diamond Ice Metallic-which was basically the color of every cell phone and computer at the turn of the millennium-and deep, moody pearls like Sinister Blue and Concord Purple. With 15 colors in the mix, the Motor Company was giving riders plenty of ways to stand out, provided they could keep the shiny side up.

Paint Health Check

Since your bike hails from the 1985-2005 "Peeling Era," we need to talk about delamination. By 2001, Harley was using a solid basecoat/clearcoat system, but the factory was still perfecting the timing between spraying the color and locking it down with clear. If a rock chip hits your Jade Sunglow Tricoat or Luxury Rich Red, it's not just a "beauty mark"-it's a breach in the hull. Once oxygen and moisture get between that clear coat and the base, the clear will start to lift and flake off like a bad sunburn. You'll see it first on the front of the tank or the edges of the fenders; if you see a "milky" edge around a chip, the delamination has already begun.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping a 2001 finish alive is sealing the perimeter. If you find a chip in your Vivid Black or Suede Green Pearl, do not wait for the weekend. Clean the area with a wax remover and apply a drop of touch-up immediately. You aren't just filling a hole; you're "glueing" the edges of the factory clear coat back down to the bike. If the clear has already started to lift (that "ledge" feeling), use a fine-grit sandpaper to very gently feather the edge of the clear before touching it up. This stops the peeling from traveling across the rest of the tin like a crack in a windshield.
