How to Find Your 2005 Harley-Davidson's Color Code

A color code is unlikely to appear on a Harley Davidson; often only the color name is listed. The code can be determined by Harley-Davidson. If there is no color code, the relevant reference is the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number. Finding a code on the bike is uncommon, so identification typically relies on Harley-Davidson or, failing a code, the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) formula.

2005 Harley-Davidson Background Info

The 2005 Harley-Davidson Vibe

Welcome to 2005, the year Harley-Davidson decided that if one coat of clear was good, four coats must be a religious experience. This was the era of the "Fat Boy" standing tall and the "Softail Deluxe" bringing that nostalgic flair back to the boulevard. Our database shows 15 colors for this year, and let me tell you, the MoCo wasn't shy about the pearls. While Vivid Black was still the bread and butter, 2005 gave us some of the deepest factory finishes ever sprayed-like Black Cherry Pearl and the legendary Lava Red Sunglo Tricoat. It was a time of "more is more," with thick, glossy finishes designed to hide the edges of those hand-painted pinstripes.

Paint Health Check

Now, here's the rub. We're deep into the Peeling Era. Those thick factory clears were great for depth, but they're notorious for "delamination." If you look at your tank and see a "milky" haze or a spot where the clear looks like it's lifting away from the Chopper Blue Pearl underneath, you've got air getting between the layers. Once that bond breaks, the clear coat starts flaking off like a bad sunburn on a tourist. It usually starts around the fuel filler neck or the edges of the fenders where road debris has compromised the seal. If you can catch a "chip" with your thumbnail and feel the edge of the clear, the clock is officially ticking.

Restoration Tip

In this era, your best friend is immediate intervention. To stop delamination from turning your fender into a "peel-and-stick" project, you have to seal those chips before the air lifts the surrounding clear. Clean the area with a prep solvent (no dish soap, unless you want to ruin the bond), apply your base color thin-don't try to fill the hole in one go-and then seal the edges of the clear coat with a high-quality topcoat. This "locks" the factory clear down and prevents that white, hazy lifting from spreading across your tins.
