How to Find Your 1992 Honda's Color Code

Honda paint codes are usually on the driver-side door jamb label, on a color ID tag that often lists the paint and factory codes. The factory code appears in the lower right corner and is the eleventh digit of the VIN. Paint codes look like NH-583M and may include letters, numbers, and dashes. Example: factory code B pairs with NH583M, corresponding to Vogue Silver Metallic Clearcoat used on some Civics, Delsols, and Preludes between 1996 and 2000.

1992 Honda Background Info

The 1992 Honda Vibe

It's 1992. Grunge is on the radio, flannel is in your closet, and the 1992 Honda lineup is dominating the pavement. Whether it was the high-revving Prelude with its four-wheel steering dreams, the bulletproof Accord, the tuners' favorite Civic, or the reliable family Mini Van, these cars were built to outlast their owners. While the factory produced plenty of shades, we've focused on the survivors-the heavy hitters that still define the era: Granada Black Metallic, the iconic (and often pink-fading) Milano Red, and the sharp Sebring Silver Metallic. These were the colors of the early-90s import boom, providing a sleek, mechanical look that didn't need to scream to be noticed.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the heart of The Peeling Era. By 1992, Honda had fully embraced the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the formula hadn't quite perfected the "long-term sun exposure" test. If your 1992 survivor has spent any time in the sun, you're likely dealing with Delamination. It starts as a tiny white bubble or a "crow's foot" crack on the roof or trunk, and before you know it, the clear coat is flaking off in sheets like a bad sunburn. Milano Red is particularly notorious; without the clear coat's UV protection, that deep red quickly turns into a chalky pastel pink. If you see the clear lifting at the edges of a stone chip, you're on the clock.

Restoration Tip

When you're dealing with 1992 clear coats, the "shelf" is your biggest enemy. Once the clear coat begins to fail, air and moisture get trapped under the lip, causing the delamination to spread like a wildfire. To save what's left, you need to seal your chips immediately before the clear lifts. If you already have a small area of peeling clear, take a piece of fine-grit sandpaper and very gently feather the edge where the clear meets the basecoat. You want to remove that "shelf" so your new touch-up can seal the boundary. Don't just dab paint in the middle-bridge the gap between the failing clear and the exposed base to lock it down.
