How to Find Your 2001 Hummer's Color Code

Hummer did not standardize the location of the color plate, so paint codes can be hard to locate. Across years they used many different spots. Usual places: the glove box or the spare tire well; if not there, it could be elsewhere. The code itself may appear as 51/WA316N, often preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two tone labels can show as BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N (Upper Color and Lower Color).

2001 Hummer Background Info

The 2001 Hummer Vibe

Welcome to 2001-the year of low-rise jeans, Limp Bizkit, and the absolute peak of the "Bigger is Better" philosophy. The Hummer H1 was still the undisputed king of the suburban jungle, a literal military tank wearing a civilian tuxedo. While the rest of the world was turning every sedan into a boring silver bubble, Hummer was leaning into the excess. Our database tracks 11 distinct colors for this era, ranging from the loud-and-proud Competition Yellow (4266) to the more refined Mesa Dusk (5228). Whether you were rocking Candy Apple Red or the tactical Night Storm, you weren't just driving a car; you were driving a statement that required two parking spots and a small oil refinery to keep moving.

Paint Health Check

We are deep in The Peeling Era. By 2001, the industry had mastered the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the sheer physics of the Hummer didn't do the paint any favors. You've got a hood the size of a billboard and a roof that's basically a solar collector for UV damage. The real enemy here is delamination. Once the clear coat loses its bond to the base color-usually starting on those massive flat horizontal surfaces-it starts to look like a bad sunburn. If you see white, flaky edges around a stone chip, that's the clear coat waving a white flag. On an H1, you also have the unique joy of aluminum body panels meeting steel components; if moisture gets under a chip at the seams, you're looking at galvanic corrosion that bubbles the paint from the inside out.

Restoration Tip

In this era, your mission is to seal every chip immediately before the clear coat has a chance to lift. Once air and moisture get under that top layer, the delamination will spread like a virus. When you find a nick on that Silver Metallic or Green Metallic fender, don't just "blob" the paint on. Use a fine-tipped applicator to fill the crater until it's level with the surrounding clear. If you're working on an H1 panel that shows a hint of white powdery oxidation (the aluminum version of rust), you must sand it back to bright metal and seal it fast. A Hummer with "patina" just looks like a neglected surplus unit; a Hummer with a sealed, glassy finish looks like a million bucks.
