Here's the salt: your 2003 Itasca is a product of the Peeling Era. By the early 2000s, manufacturers had mastered the look of solvent-based metallics, but the clear coat technology was still fighting a losing battle against the sun. If you own a Sunova or a Horizon, you've likely seen the "sunburn" effect-delamination. It starts on the upper caps and roof lines where the clear coat loses its grip and begins to flake off in sheets. Once that clear lifts, the thin metallic basecoat underneath is defenseless; it'll oxidize and turn into a chalky mess faster than you can find a level campsite.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 2003 paint is to seal the edges immediately. If you see a chip or a small "bubble" where the clear is starting to lift, you need to get on it before the wind catches it on the highway and peels it back like a banana. When repairing these spots, carefully feather the edges of the failing clear coat with a fine-grit abrasive, but stay light-that Gray Metallic basecoat is thinner than you think. Apply your touch-up layers to seal that transition zone. This stops moisture from getting under the remaining clear and buys you years of extra life before you have to consider a full respray.
