How to Find Your 1965 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1965 Jaguar Background Info

The 1965 Jaguar Vibe

Welcome to 1965-the year the E-Type 4.2-liter became the undisputed king of the road and the Mark X was the ultimate "gentleman's express." In my shop, we don't just see cars; we see a 10-color masterclass in British sophistication. Whether you're looking at the iconic curves of a Series 1 Roadster or the slab-sided grace of a saloon, the vibe was clear: bold, deep, and unapologetically glossy. We've kept the 10 heavy hitters in our database, from the essential British Racing Green and Signal Red to the more delicate Pale Primrose and that sharp Silver Blue Metallic. Back then, if you pulled up in a Jag finished in Golden Sand, people didn't just look-they stared.

Paint Health Check

Now, listen close: 1965 puts you right in the heart of the Single Stage Era. We weren't hiding behind plastic-feeling clear coats back then. This is thick, pigment-rich synthetic enamel. It's tough, sure, but it has one mortal enemy: Oxidation. Unlike modern cars that peel like a sunburn when they fail, 1960s Jaguar paint "chalks." That Warwick Gray or Dark Blue will slowly lose its soul, turning from a mirror finish into a dry, matte ghost if it's left to bake in the sun. If your paint looks like someone rubbed a chalkboard over it, that's the pigment dying on the vine.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up an original 1965 survivor or laying down a fresh coat of Silver Gray Metallic, you have to treat it like a living thing. My rule is simple: It needs wax or it dies. Because there's no clear coat to act as a sacrificial shield, the pigment itself is taking the hit from UV rays and road grime. To keep that deep, liquid luster that Jaguars are famous for, you've got to seal it. Buff it out to get rid of the "chalk," then hit it with a heavy coat of high-quality wax. Do that twice a year, and that Cream (Old English White) will still be turning heads when your grandkids are behind the wheel.
