How to Find Your 1966 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1966 Jaguar Background Info

The 1966 Jaguar Vibe

1966 was the year Jaguar truly owned the road. Whether it was the legendary E-Type making everyone else look like they were driving tractors or the Mark X carrying the heavy hitters of the "Swinging Sixties," the look was unmistakable. We've focused our database on the six colors that defined this peak era-from the iconic, high-visibility Signal Red to the sophisticated, chilled-out Silver Gray Metallic and Pale Primrose. This was the age of deep, heavy-bodied finishes that didn't just sit on the metal; they lived on it.

Paint Health Check

In 1966, Jaguar was firmly in the Single Stage Era. You aren't looking at a clear coat; you're looking at raw, honest synthetic enamel. The good news? This paint has a "depth of field" modern factory robots can't touch. The bad news? It's alive, and it's hungry for oxygen. Without a protective barrier, these colors suffer from Oxidation-that chalky, hazy fade that turns a vibrant Signal Red into something resembling a weathered pink eraser. If your Silver Blue Metallic looks like it's covered in a fine layer of dust that won't wash off, that's not dirt; it's the paint quite literally dying on the vine.

Restoration Tip

Because this is single-stage paint, your first step isn't more paint-it's removing the "dead skin." Use a high-quality rubbing compound to carefully buff away the oxidized top layer and reveal the rich pigment hiding underneath. But here is the golden rule for 1966 steel: It needs wax or it dies. Without a clear coat to shield it, the only thing standing between your Jaguar and a chalky grave is a sacrificial layer of high-solvent carnauba wax. Slather it on, or prepare to watch your Pale Primrose fade into the sunset for good.
