How to Find Your 1968 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1968 Jaguar Background Info

The 1968 Jaguar Vibe

1968 was a transition year for the big cats in Coventry. The legendary E-Type was shifting into its "Series 2" skin, and the 420 sedans were still prowling the streets with that unmistakable British swagger. Back then, the Jaguar color palette was as sophisticated as a London social club, and we've tracked down 16 of the survivors. Whether your Jag is wearing the iconic British Racing Green, the earthy tones of Sable and Honey Beige, or the high-visibility scream of Signal Red, these cars didn't just drive-they made a statement. With a database count this high, it's clear Jaguar wasn't shy about variety; they offered everything from the subtle Ascot Gray to the sunny, polarizing Pale Primrose.

Paint Health Check

You're dealing with the Single Stage Era. In 1968, there was no clear coat to hide behind; the pigment and the protection were mixed together in one thick, chemical-heavy layer of cellulose or synthetic enamel. The good news? It has a depth of color modern robots can't replicate. The bad news? It's alive, and it's breathing. If your E-Type looks like it's been dusted with flour, that's not dirt-it's Oxidation. The sun literally bakes the binders out of the paint, leaving a chalky, "dead skin" finish. These old finishes are tough, but they are suicidal; if you don't feed them wax, the paint simply dries out, cracks into "crow's feet," and dies.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up or buffing a '68 Jag, remember: if your applicator pad isn't turning the color of the car, you aren't doing it right. Because this is single-stage paint, you're supposed to see paint transfer on your cloth-that's you leveling the oxidized surface to reveal the fresh pigment underneath. To keep that Willow Green or Regency Red from fading into a memory, use a high-quality carnauba wax after every repair. Think of it as a sealant for a wound; without that wax barrier, the fresh paint will oxidize twice as fast as the original. It needs wax or it dies-simple as that.
