How to Find Your 1971 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1971 Jaguar Background Info

The 1971 Jaguar Vibe

1971 was a heavy-hitting year for Coventry. The Series 3 E-Type had just roared onto the scene with that massive V12, and the XJ6 was busy redefining what a "gentleman's express" actually looked like. In our shop, we track 12 distinct colors for this year, and let me tell you, the variety was as bold as the engines. You weren't just picking a car; you were picking a personality. Whether it was the deep, regal mystery of Regency Red, the quintessential British Racing Green, or the unapologetically 70s earthiness of Sable and Willow Green, these cars were meant to be seen. It was a time of Old English White elegance and Signal Red speed-honest colors for honest metal.

Paint Health Check

Now, let's talk shop. If you're looking at a factory-original '71, you're dealing with the Single Stage Era. This isn't the plastic-wrapped stuff you see on modern crossovers; this is synthetic enamel. It's thick, it's rich, and it has a "living" finish. But here's the rub: there's no clear coat standing guard. That means your Dark Blue or Ascot Gray is sitting right out there in the elements. Over fifty years, that pigment starts to "chalk." It's called oxidation. If your Pale Primrose looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a spring flower, that's the paint quite literally dying on the vine. Without a protective barrier, the sun and the rain just eat the surface until the luster is long gone.

Restoration Tip

Here's the Golden Rule for 1971 steel: It needs wax or it dies. If you're doing a repair or just trying to save what's left of that Silver Gray Metallic, you have to feed the finish. Before you touch up those chips, you need to buff away that chalky oxidation to find the "true" color underneath. Once you've laid down your fresh paint and let it cure, you'd better be ready to seal it. A high-quality carnauba wax is your best friend here. It acts as the "artificial skin" that the factory didn't give you. Keep it waxed, keep it covered, and that Black or Light Blue will keep its depth for another half-century.
