How to Find Your 1972 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1972 Jaguar Background Info

The 1972 Jaguar Vibe

It's 1972, and Jaguar is transitioning from the raw muscle of the sixties into the refined, V12-powered luxury of the seventies. Whether you're piloting a Series 3 E-Type or the stately XJ6, the look was all about presence. We've got 14 era-perfect shades in our archives, and they tell the story of a brand with one foot in British tradition and the other in "modern" seventies flair. You've got the eternal icons like British Racing Green and Old English White, but 1972 was also the year of the earth tone. Shades like Sable and Willow Green defined the "Coventry chic" of the day, proving that even a Jag looks good in the colors of the forest.

Paint Health Check

Back in '72, Jaguar was still firmly in the Single Stage Era. We were spraying synthetic enamels-thick, honest paint where the color and the gloss were mixed into one heavy layer. There's no clear coat here to act as a sacrificial shield. That means your Regency Red or Dark Blue isn't "peeling"-it's simply surrendering to the atmosphere. Over the decades, UV rays and oxygen turn that glossy finish into a "chalky" or "milky" haze. This is classic oxidation. The paint is still there, but the surface has died and gone to heaven, leaving you with a flat, dusty finish that loses its depth and invites the real enemy: British rust.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a 1972 survivor, remember the Golden Rule: It needs wax or it dies. Because these single-stage colors are porous, they are "thirsty" for protection. Before you apply any touch-up, you've got to buff away that chalky oxidation to find the true Signal Red or Pale Primrose hiding underneath. Once you've leveled the repair, seal the whole car in a high-quality carnauba wax or a period-correct sealant. Without that barrier, the sun will start drinking your new paint job before the weekend is over. Keep it fed, and that 1970s depth will stay right where it belongs.
