How to Find Your 1974 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1974 Jaguar Background Info

The 1974 Jaguar Vibe

Welcome to 1974, where the E-Type was taking its final, dignified bow and the XJ6 Series II was the new king of the British driveway. This was the era of "sophisticated disco"-a time when Jaguar wasn't afraid to lean into the earth tones of the decade. With 11 distinct shades in our database, it's a masterclass in '70s aesthetics. You've got the heavy hitters like British Racing Green and Signal Red, but the real soul of '74 lives in those "harvest" hues like Green Sand, Sable, and the undeniably classic Pale Primrose. These weren't just colors; they were a mood, usually paired with a thick cloud of pipe tobacco and a V12 hum.

Paint Health Check

Being from the Single Stage Era, your Jag's finish is a proud but temperamental beast. Back then, we didn't have clear coats to hide behind; the pigment and the protection were mixed into one thick, honest layer. But here's the rub: if that Regency Red or Azure Blue has been sitting out since the Nixon administration, it's likely suffering from "The Chalk." That's heavy oxidation, where the surface of the paint literally dies and turns into a dull, white powder. Without a clear coat to act as a shield, the sun eats the pigment for breakfast. It starts as a slight fade and ends with your roof looking like a chalkboard.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1974 iron? It needs wax or it dies. Because this is single-stage paint, you've actually got a secret weapon: you can often buff the "dead" paint away to reveal the fresh color underneath-something you can't do with modern thin finishes. However, once you bring that Fern Gray or Silver Gray Metallic back to a mirror shine, you must seal it immediately. A high-quality carnauba wax or a modern sealant is the only thing standing between your Jaguar and a return to that chalky grave. Treat it like a living thing-keep it hydrated and out of the high-noon sun.
