How to Find Your 1975 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1975 Jaguar Background Info

The 1975 Jaguar Vibe

Welcome to 1975, the year Jaguar decided to trade the E-Type's curves for the sharp, "futuristic" lines of the brand new XJ-S. It was the height of the British Leyland era, where the tea breaks were long and the quality control was... experimental. Whether you were piloting a Series II XJ6 or the V12 XJ12, you weren't just driving a car; you were managing a mood. Our database tracks 14 distinct shades from this year, a palette that perfectly captures that mid-70s transition. You've got the holdover icons like British Racing Green and Signal Red, but the real soul of '75 lives in the earthy, "leisure suit" tones like Sable, Green Sand, and Fern Gray. It was a time when Jaguars looked just as good parked outside a discotheque as they did broken down on the side of the M1.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here, my friend. Back in '75, Jaguar was spraying thermoplastic acrylic lacquer or high-solids enamels that were as thick as a London fog. This stuff doesn't delaminate or "peel" like the plastic-wrap clear coats of the 90s; instead, it undergoes a slow, dignified death known as Oxidation. If your Regency Red or Azure Blue looks more like a chalkboard than a mirror, that's the paint drying out and dying on the vine. To make matters worse, the British Leyland "quality" meant the metal underneath wasn't always prepped with a smile, so if you see "spider webbing" or tiny cracks in your Silver Gray Metallic, that's the paint losing its grip on reality.

Restoration Tip

This paint is "thirsty"-it needs to be fed or it dies. If you're working with an original 1975 finish, do not go straight to a heavy compound or you'll burn through that Pale Primrose faster than a V12 gulps gas. Start with a deep-cleansing polish to pull that chalky oxidation off the surface and reveal the pigment underneath. Once you've found the color again, you must seal it immediately. These old single-stage formulas have no "shield"-the pigment is the surface. Use a high-quality carnauba wax or a period-correct sealant and apply it often. In this era, if you aren't waxing, you aren't winning.
