How to Find Your 1977 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1977 Jaguar Background Info

The 1977 Jaguar Vibe

Welcome to 1977, the year the XJ-S was trying to convince the world it was a worthy successor to the E-Type, and the Series II XJ6 was still the king of the executive car park. Jaguar was leaning hard into the "Earth Tone" era-if it looked like it belonged in a high-end safari or a wood-paneled study, they sprayed it. With 12 colors in our vault, we've got the full spectrum of that 70s British swagger. From the quintessential British Racing Green to the unapologetically brown Carriage Brown and the "Harvest Gold" cousin known as Green Sand, these cars didn't just drive; they made a statement about your upholstery preferences.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back then, the color and the shine were all mixed into one thick, solvent-heavy chemical cocktail. There's no clear coat to peel off, but don't get cocky-this paint has a different enemy: Oxidation. If your Jag has been sitting in the sun, that deep Regency Red or Squadron Blue has likely turned into a dull, chalky mess. This "chalking" happens because the top layer of the pigment is literally dying from UV exposure. It's a thick skin, but it's a thirsty one, and without a barrier, the elements will leach the life right out of the finish until it looks like a chalkboard.

Restoration Tip

Because this is single-stage paint, you can actually "bring it back from the dead" in a way you can't with modern cars. If you're seeing a chalky fade, you're looking at dead pigment sitting on top of good paint. Use a high-quality compound to level that oxidation, but remember the Salty Painter's Golden Rule: It needs wax or it dies. Once you've polished it back to a mirror finish, you must seal it immediately. These old-school enamels are porous; if you don't keep a fresh coat of wax on them, the oxidation will return before the next oil change. Feed the paint, and it'll keep that 1977 glow.
