How to Find Your 1982 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1982 Jaguar Background Info

The 1982 Jaguar Vibe

In 1982, Jaguar was the pinnacle of "old world" luxury trying to survive in a new world of high-tech competition. Whether you were piloting a Series III XJ6 through London or taking an XJ-S for a spirited run on the motorway, your car made a statement. Our database covers a generous spread of 16 colors from this year, reflecting a transition away from the wild 70s into a more sophisticated, "executive" palette. You had your pick of stately earth tones like Grosvenor Brown and Silver Sand Metallic, or the undeniably British Poseidon Racing Green Metallic. These weren't just colors; they were coats of armor for the discerning driver.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with the pre-1985 era, your Jaguar is firmly in the Single Stage Era. Jaguar was using Thermoplastic Acrylic (TPA) at the time-a thick, high-gloss finish that looks incredible when fresh but acts like a diva as it ages. The biggest threat to your 1982 finish isn't just modern road grime; it's "Oxidation." Without the protective shield of a modern clear coat, the pigment is directly exposed to the elements. If your Sage Green Metallic or Claret Metallic is looking chalky or "milky," that's the paint literally dying on the surface. Worse yet, TPA is famous for "crazing"-those fine, spiderweb-like cracks that happen when the paint gets too hot and loses its flexibility.

Restoration Tip

The rule for 1982 paint is simple: It needs wax or it dies. If you're lucky enough to have original paint that hasn't started "checking" (cracking) yet, you need to keep it hydrated. Use a high-quality carnauba wax or a non-abrasive sealant to create a barrier against the sun. If you are doing a touch-up with our solvent-based materials, remember that you're working with a system that has more "meat" on the bone than modern factory finishes. Don't be afraid to build your layers, but always give it a deep polish and a heavy wax once it's cured to prevent that dreaded chalky fade from returning.
