How to Find Your 1983 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1983 Jaguar Background Info

The 1983 Jaguar Vibe

Welcome to 1983, where the XJ6 and the XJS weren't just cars-they were mobile wood-and-leather lounges for the upwardly mobile. This was the era of "Earth Tones and Opulence." While other manufacturers were busy turning everything into plastic, Jaguar was still leaning hard into a sophisticated palette. We've cataloged 16 distinct shades for this year, ranging from the dignified Grosvenor Brown and Antelope Metallic to the "get-out-of-my-way" Sebring Red. If you're lucky enough to have a survivor in Sage Green Metallic or Silver Sand Metallic, you're looking at a time capsule of British luxury that hasn't been matched since.

Paint Health Check

Here's the cold, hard truth: 1983 was the heart of the Single Stage Era. Jaguar was still primarily using Thermoplastic Acrylic (TPA) paint, which is a fancy way of saying your car is wearing a coat of high-gloss history that is constantly trying to turn into chalk. Without a modern clear coat to hide behind, these pigments are sitting ducks for the sun. If your Tudor White looks more like a school whiteboard or your Claret Metallic has lost its depth, you're dealing with heavy oxidation. Even worse, these TPA finishes are famous for "checking" or "crazing"-those tiny, spiderweb cracks that happen when the paint gets brittle. It's a "Single Stage" life, and it's a battle against the elements every single day.

Restoration Tip

When you're working with 1983 single-stage paint, remember the golden rule: It needs wax or it dies. Because there's no clear coat to protect the color, the pigment is the top layer. If you're touching up a spot or buffing out some fade, you're peeling back a microscopic layer of old paint to find the fresh stuff underneath. Once you find that shine, you have to seal it immediately. Use a high-quality carnauba wax or a period-correct sealant to create a barrier. If you leave that fresh paint "naked" after a repair, the oxygen will start eating it again before the weekend is over. Feed the paint, keep it sealed, and it'll keep that "Vanden Plas" glow for another forty years.
