How to Find Your 1992 Jaguar's Color Code

Jaguar paint color codes are usually on the drivers door jamb. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be ANYWHERE! Under the hood, in the trunk. Typical format: 1957/HGZ, which corresponds to Jaguar Racing Green Pearl. Some Jaguars will have the 1957 code but most will only show the HGZ code. Same color across models may have different names: Racing Clearcoat, Green Performance Clearcoat, etc. It's the same paint!

1992 Jaguar Background Info

The 1992 Jaguar Vibe

By 1992, Jaguar was under the Ford wing, trying to prove that British soul could play nice with modern production standards. It was the era of the long-nosed XJS and the squared-off XJ6 (XJ40), and the color palette reflected a brand reinventing its cool. We've got 18 colors in our vault for this year, and it's a masterclass in early '90s luxury. You weren't just buying a car; you were choosing between a deep, moody Black Cherry Pearl, the quintessential Brooklands Green, or the flashy, high-society Kingfisher Blue Metallic. It was a time when Jaguars finally looked as expensive as they felt, but beneath that shine, the technology was entering a tricky phase.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Peeling Era. By 1992, Jaguar had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system. While this gave the metallics like Silver Frost and Diamond Blue a depth that single-stage paint couldn't touch, it introduced a new villain: Delamination. If your Jag has spent too much time baking in the sun, you're likely seeing "cloud peeling" on the roof, hood, and trunk. The clear coat starts to lose its grip on the color coat, turning into a flaky, white mess that looks like a bad sunburn. Once the air and moisture get between those layers, the clear will lift in sheets, leaving your beautiful Flamenco Pearl or Jade Green looking like it's molting.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1992 paint is simple: Seal the chips before the clear lifts. On these cars, a rock chip isn't just an eyesore; it's an entry point for delamination. If you see a tiny crater in your Oyster Metallic finish, don't wait. Clean it out and get a fresh layer of color and clear on there immediately to "bandage" the edges. If you let the wind get under that clear coat at highway speeds, it'll pull the finish right off the metal. When you're touching up, build your layers slowly-don't try to fill the hole in one go, or you'll end up with a blob that won't level.
