How to Find Your 1979 Jeep's Color Code

Jeep codes are difficult to find. In the good old days, they hid them on top of the radiator support, under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS; only BS is the color code (also QBS, PBS, TBS, etc.). The first letter is a "Year Code". BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately, Jeep lists just BS.

1979 Jeep Background Info

The 1979 Jeep Vibe

Welcome to the peak of the "Earth Tone" era. In 1979, Jeep was leaning hard into the rugged outdoorsman aesthetic, offering 14 different ways to make your CJ-7 or Wagoneer blend in with a forest or a canyon. Whether you were rocking Alpaca Brown Metallic or the desert-ready Morocco Buff, your Jeep wasn't just a vehicle-it was a statement that you preferred mud to asphalt. This was the year of the "Golden Eagle" and the "Renegade," where high-impact colors like Mandarin Orange and Saxon Yellow competed with deep, moody metallics like Bordeaux and Russet. It was a glorious time when the paint was thick, the decals were loud, and the adventures were analog.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era, kid. Back in '79, Jeep used a heavy-duty acrylic enamel. Unlike modern cars that have a "plastic" clear coat shield, your Jeep's color and gloss are all mixed into one thick layer. But here's the rub: that pigment is constantly fighting a war against the sun. If your Ensign Blue or Firecracker Red looks like it was rubbed with a chalkboard eraser, you're looking at "The Chalk"-better known as oxidation. The paint isn't necessarily gone; the surface has just died and turned into a powdery, matte crust. Metallics from this year, like Arrowhead Silver or Cumberland Green, are particularly vulnerable because the metal flakes can actually start to surface as the paint binders break down.

Restoration Tip

Since this is single-stage paint, you have a secret weapon: there is fresh color hiding underneath that dead, chalky surface. It needs wax or it dies. If you're seeing heavy oxidation, don't just spray over it. You need to "exfoliate" the paint. Use a light rubbing compound or a dedicated oxidation remover to buff away the dead top layer until the original 1979 shine returns. Once you see that Wedgwood Blue pop again, seal it immediately with a high-quality carnauba wax. Without a clear coat, that wax is the only thing standing between your paint and the elements. Treat it like skin-keep it clean, keep it fed, and keep it out of the desert sun when you aren't wheeling.
