How to Find Your 1984 Jeep's Color Code

Jeep codes are difficult to find. In the good old days, they hid them on top of the radiator support, under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS; only BS is the color code (also QBS, PBS, TBS, etc.). The first letter is a "Year Code". BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately, Jeep lists just BS.

1984 Jeep Background Info

The 1984 Jeep Vibe

1984 was a hell of a year for Jeep. While Van Halen's "Jump" was blasting out of the dashboard of the legendary CJ-7, AMC was busy launching the XJ Cherokee-the rig that basically invented the modern SUV. Whether you were driving a wood-grained Grand Wagoneer or a Scrambler, Jeep wasn't shy about the palette. With 15 colors in our database, 1984 was a buffet of Reagan-era optimism. You had the earthy, mountain-man metallics like Chestnut Brown and Cinnamon, but you also had those high-visibility 80s "screamers" like Sebring Red and Sunshine Yellow that you could see from three trails away.

Paint Health Check

We're firmly in the Single Stage Era here. In '84, Jeep wasn't bothered with fancy multi-layer clear coats; they sprayed a thick, heavy-bodied acrylic enamel that carried the pigment and the gloss in one go. The good news? That paint has some "meat" on its bones. The bad news? It's prone to the "Chalky Death." If your Deep Night Blue or Nordic Green looks like it was dusted with powdered sugar, that's oxidation. Without a clear coat to act as a sacrificial shield, the sun eats the pigment directly. If you don't feed this paint with protection, it'll turn matte and porous faster than a desert floor.

Restoration Tip

If your '84 looks dull, don't panic-single-stage paint is surprisingly forgiving. Since the color goes all the way through, you can often "level" the oxidation with a light polishing compound to find the fresh, vibrant paint hiding underneath. But here is the Salty Painter's golden rule: It needs wax or it dies. Once you've buffed back that original Jamaican Beige or Olympic White, you've exposed "fresh" pores in the paint. Seal it immediately with a high-quality wax or sealant. In 1984, the maintenance mantra was simple: if you aren't waxing it twice a year, you're just watching it turn back into chalk.
