How to Find Your 1992 Jeep's Color Code

Jeep codes are difficult to find. In the good old days, they hid them on top of the radiator support, under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS; only BS is the color code (also QBS, PBS, TBS, etc.). The first letter is a "Year Code". BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately, Jeep lists just BS.

1992 Jeep Background Info

The 1992 Jeep Vibe

Welcome to 1992-the year the Wrangler YJ was still rocking square headlights and the Cherokee XJ was cementing its status as the king of the suburban driveway. It was the era of flannel shirts and grunge, and your Jeep's paint job reflected that rugged, no-nonsense attitude. While the factory offered plenty of experimental shades back then, we've focused our database on the true survivors that defined the look: Bright White, the high-metallic Black Crystal, and that specific matte-satin Black designated for the hard tops. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform for the weekend warrior.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in The Peeling Era. By 1992, the industry had mostly moved to basecoat/clearcoat systems, but the "bond" wasn't always as strong as a Jeeper's loyalty. If your rig has spent its life outside, you're likely dealing with delamination-that nasty stage where the clear coat starts to lift, flake, or look like a bad sunburn on the hood and roof. Because the manufacturers were still perfecting the chemistry of solvent-based layers, once a stone chip breaches the surface, the air and moisture get under the clear and start "lifting" it away from the pigment. If you see white, crusty edges around a chip, your clear coat is waving the white flag.

Restoration Tip

In this era of paint, speed is your best friend. Seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. If you let a rock chip sit on a 1992 fender, the surrounding clear coat will eventually lose its grip and start to flake off in sheets. When you're touching up that Black Crystal or Bright White, use a fine-grit applicator to lightly feather the edges of the damage. You want to bridge the gap between the original color and the surrounding clear with your fresh solvent-based match. This "locks down" the perimeter, preventing the dreaded delamination creep that turns a tiny nick into a full-blown hood respray.
