How to Find Your 1993 Jeep's Color Code

Jeep codes are difficult to find. In the good old days, they hid them on top of the radiator support, under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS; only BS is the color code (also QBS, PBS, TBS, etc.). The first letter is a "Year Code". BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately, Jeep lists just BS.

1993 Jeep Background Info

The 1993 Jeep Vibe

1993 was a hell of a year for Jeep. You had the Grand Cherokee ZJ crashing through glass windows in Detroit to make its big debut, while the YJ Wrangler was still bouncing around on leaf springs and making people argue about square headlights. It was the peak of the grunge era, and the color palette reflected it. Since we're looking at a smaller batch of colors in our database today, we've focused on the true survivors-the bold, high-contrast essentials like Flame Red, Bright White, and Black Crystal. These weren't just colors; they were the war paint for the era of flannel shirts and mud tires.

Paint Health Check

If you're driving a Jeep from '93, you are living smack in the middle of "The Peeling Era." This was the wild west for clear coat technology. The factories were transitiong away from the old-school thick stuff, but they hadn't quite perfected the bond between the color and the top layer yet. On a thirty-year-old rig, you're likely seeing "delamination"-that's when the clear coat starts flaking off in sheets like a bad sunburn on a tourist. Once that clear lifts and exposes the basecoat to the air, your Flame Red starts turning a chalky pink, and the moisture starts looking for a way to reach the metal.

Restoration Tip

With 1993 paint, your biggest job is stopping the "lift." If you see a stone chip, don't wait for the weekend to fix it; seal it immediately. If the clear coat is already starting to peel around the edges of a scratch, you need to gently sand those "feathers" back until you hit a spot where the clear is actually still stuck to the paint. If you just dab color over a peeling edge, the old clear will keep lifting underneath your new repair, and the whole thing will pop off in six months. Build your layers thin, let them flash, and seal that edge tight.
