How to Find Your 2005 Jeep's Color Code

Jeep codes are difficult to find. In the good old days, they hid them on top of the radiator support, under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS; only BS is the color code (also QBS, PBS, TBS, etc.). The first letter is a "Year Code". BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately, Jeep lists just BS.

2005 Jeep Background Info

The 2005 Jeep Vibe

2005 was a hell of a year for Jeep. You had the legendary TJ Wrangler clinging to its final years of the 4.0L straight-six, the Liberty trying to look cute while getting muddy, and the Grand Cherokee (WK) officially ditching the solid front axle for a bit of "sophistication." We've got 21 colors in our vault for this year, and man, Chrysler wasn't afraid of the saturation slider back then. Whether you were rocking Impact Orange to be seen from space, Deep Beryl Green Pearl for that forest-floor aesthetic, or the ever-popular Bright Silver Metallic, these rigs were built for the trail-even if most of them just conquered the mall curb.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the peak of the Peeling Era. If your 2005 Jeep hasn't been a pampered garage queen, you're likely staring at the dreaded "Delamination." By this point, the factory was getting efficient with clear coats, but "efficient" is just a polite way of saying the clear coat on your hood and roof is probably thinner than a trail-map. When that clear starts to lift, it looks like your Jeep is sunburned and peeling. Flame Red and Midnight Blue Pearl are notorious for UV damage-if you don't catch those chips early, the sun gets under the clear, cooks the basecoat, and then the whole sheet starts to flake off like a cheap scab.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 2005 paint: Seal those chips immediately before the clear lifts. If you see a rock chip, don't wait for the weekend. Once moisture and air get between the color and the clear, the bond is toast and you're looking at a full respray. If you're dealing with early delamination, you've got to feather those edges down smooth before applying any new layers. And for the love of the trail, stay away from the heavy-grit sandpaper on those metallic pearls like Atlantic Blue; you'll disturb the "flake" and end up with a dark smudge that no amount of buffing will fix. Build your layers slowly, and remember: a little touch-up now saves a $3,000 trip to the booth later.
