How to Find Your 2009 Jeep's Color Code

Jeep codes are difficult to find. In the good old days, they hid them on top of the radiator support, under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS; only BS is the color code (also QBS, PBS, TBS, etc.). The first letter is a "Year Code". BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately, Jeep lists just BS.

2009 Jeep Background Info

The 2009 Jeep Vibe

By 2009, Jeep was leaning hard into the "adventure" aesthetic, even while the rest of the world was tightening its belt. We've got 27 colors in the vault for this year, and it wasn't just shades of gray. You had the Wrangler and the Commander prowling the streets in high-impact tones like Detonator Yellow and Sunburst Orange Metallic. It was a vibrant time for the brand-the Grand Cherokee and Liberty were everywhere, and whether you were rocking Deep Water Blue Pearl or the rugged Jeep Green Effect, these rigs were designed to look just as good at the trailhead as they did in the driveway.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to The Thin Paint Era. By 2009, the "Robot Efficiency" age was in full swing at the factory. The goal was to use as little material as possible while still making the car look shiny on the showroom floor. The result? A finish that's notoriously thin. If your Jeep has spent the last decade and a half under the sun, you're likely fighting clear coat failure-especially on the flat surfaces of the hood and roof. These finishes don't just get "chalky" like the old school lacquer; they delaminate. Once that thin clear layer starts to flake off like a bad sunburn, the base color underneath is defenseless.

Restoration Tip

When you're repairing a 2009 finish, your mantra needs to be: build layers slowly; don't blob it. Because the factory paint is so thin, a heavy-handed touch-up will leave a visible "shelf" that ruins the repair. Use thin, light passes to build your color. If you're working with those high-metallic shades like Bright Silver or Modern Blue Effect, multiple light coats are the only way to get the flakes to lay down correctly without mottling. Most importantly, since this is a two-stage era, you absolutely need to finish with a clear coat to seal the deal and match the original factory gloss. If you see edges peeling around your chip, sand them smooth (feathering) before you apply any paint, or the new coat will just lift right along with the old failing clear.
