How to Find Your Jeep Renegade's Color Code

Jeep codes are difficult to find. In the good old days, they hid them on top of the radiator support, under engine grease and oil. Later models put them on the drivers door jamb. Typical format: BS/GBS; only BS is the color code (also QBS, PBS, TBS, etc.). The first letter is a "Year Code". BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; the G in GBS is not part of the color code. Lately, Jeep lists just BS.

The Color Breakdown

Jeep really let the design team loose on the Renegade, recording a massive 84 colors over its run. They clearly decided that a "mini-Wrangler" deserved a wardrobe to match, ranging from the military-inspired Anvil and Commando to the "look-at-me" neon vibes of Hypergreen and Detonator Yellow. Whether yours is a classic Bright White or the tropical Bikini Pearl Metallic, the Renegade is a car that wears its personality on its sleeve-or rather, its hood.

What to Watch For

While these colors are head-turners, the Renegade's paint is known for being a bit on the delicate side. Owners often report that the finish can feel "soft" or "brittle," meaning small road pebbles can lead to chips that seem to flake off more than they should. Keep a close eye on the front edge of the hood and the area around the rear hatchback, as the clear coat in these spots can get tired after a few years in the sun.

To find your match, open the driver's side door and look at the B-pillar (the frame where the door latches). You're looking for a three-digit code (like PX8 or PAU). Just a heads-up: Jeep sometimes adds a stray letter like "P" or "Q" at the beginning of the code on the sticker-focus on the last two or three digits to find your true shade. Also, if you have a two-tone Renegade, remember that your roof color (usually Jet Black) is a separate code from your main body color!

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many Renegade colors are packed with metallic flakes or pearl (we're looking at you, Bikini Pearl and Granite Crystal), you need to be a professional shaker. Give your touch-up bottle or spray can a solid 60 seconds of vigorous shaking before you start. Those sparkles like to settle at the bottom, and you want them suspended in the paint for a perfect match.

When applying, remember that Jeep paint prefers "thin and many" over "thick and one." If you're filling a chip, use the tip of a toothpick or the very edge of your brush to drop a tiny dot of paint into the center of the chip and let it spread itself out. If it's still a bit low after 20 minutes, add one more tiny layer. It requires patience, but building it up slowly prevents that "blobby" look and ensures your repair stays put.
