How to Find Your 1998 Land-Rover's Color Code

Later model Land Rovers have paint codes on the drivers door jamb. Older models usually have them under the front hood on the radiator support. Codes may appear as short alphanumeric strings like LRC961 or HAF; both can refer to the same color on one vehicle. Example: LRC961 HAF corresponds to Epsom Green Clearcoat. Labels may show either LRC961 or HAF. On older cars, locations include both the drivers door jamb and the radiator support.

1998 Land-Rover Background Info

The 1998 Land-Rover Vibe

1998 was a hell of a bridge year for the green oval. While the world was busy worrying about the Y2K bug, Land-Rover was busy evolving the Discovery from the Series I to the Series II and keeping the legendary Defender and the P38 Range Rover in the mud. In our books, Chawton White is the undisputed king of the safari-the overlander's tuxedo. It didn't matter if you were crossing the Kalahari or just a very aggressive suburban curb; this was the era when Land-Rover really started leaning into that "rugged luxury" look. We've focused on the survivors like Chawton White because, frankly, it's the only color that truly looks right with a bit of dried mud on the fenders.

Paint Health Check

Now, let's talk shop. We are firmly in the "Peeling Era" here. By 1998, the factory had moved fully into the basecoat-and-clearcoat game, and let's just say the clear coat on these rigs is often the first thing to surrender. If the roof or hood of your Disco or Range Rover looks like it's got a bad case of "sunburn," you're looking at delamination. This is where the clear coat loses its grip on the base color and starts peeling off in sheets. It usually starts around the roof gutters or the edges of the hood. If you see tiny bubbles or a milky haze, that's the clear coat waving the white flag.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1998 paint: **Seal the chips immediately before the clear lifts.** Once a rock chip pierces that clear coat, moisture gets underneath and starts undermining the bond. If you've got a small chip, don't just "blob" the paint in there. Clean it out, apply your color, and then make sure you use a clear coat to bridge the gap between the repair and the old factory finish. You're essentially "gluing" the edges of the factory clear back down. If the clear coat is already curling at the edges, you've got to carefully sand back those "flaps" before touching up, or the wind will just catch the new paint and peel it right off like a cheap sticker.
