How to Find Your 1999 Land-Rover's Color Code

Later model Land Rovers have paint codes on the drivers door jamb. Older models usually have them under the front hood on the radiator support. Codes may appear as short alphanumeric strings like LRC961 or HAF; both can refer to the same color on one vehicle. Example: LRC961 HAF corresponds to Epsom Green Clearcoat. Labels may show either LRC961 or HAF. On older cars, locations include both the drivers door jamb and the radiator support.

1999 Land-Rover Background Info

The 1999 Land-Rover Vibe

It's 1999. You're worried about the Y2K bug, but your Land-Rover is worried about whether the trail ahead has enough clearance for its new air suspension. This was the year the Discovery II and the P38 Range Rover were trying to prove that "luxury" and "getting stuck in a bog" could coexist. While the rest of the world was experimenting with teal and champagne metallics that aged like milk, we've focused on the survivors-specifically Chawton White. It's the color of UN expeditions and safari legends. It's a color that says you're more likely to be winching a friend out of a ditch than sitting in a Starbucks drive-thru, even if the reality was usually the latter.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to The Peeling Era. By 1999, Land-Rover was fully committed to the basecoat-and-clearcoat system, which was great for the showroom floor but a ticking time bomb for the driveway. If your Rover has spent its life under the sun, you're likely seeing "delamination"-that's painter-speak for your clear coat shedding skin like a lizard. It usually starts on the hood or that massive flat roof. Once the clear coat decides to part ways with the base color, moisture gets in, and the "sunburn" spreads. On an aluminum-bodied rig like a Defender or a Range Rover, you won't see the orange rust of a Jeep, but you'll see the clear lift and the paint turn chalky underneath.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1999 glass-and-gloss: Seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. If you spot a stone chip, don't wait for the weekend. A tiny breach in the clear coat is an invitation for pressurized car washes and rain to start peeling the layers apart. Clean the area, dab your touch-up paint to fill the crater, and make sure you've bridged the gap between the base and the surrounding clear. Think of it as a tactical weld for your aesthetic; if you don't seal the edges now, you'll be looking at a full respray once the delamination hits the size of a dinner plate.
