How to Find Your 2002 Land-Rover's Color Code

Later model Land Rovers have paint codes on the drivers door jamb. Older models usually have them under the front hood on the radiator support. Codes may appear as short alphanumeric strings like LRC961 or HAF; both can refer to the same color on one vehicle. Example: LRC961 HAF corresponds to Epsom Green Clearcoat. Labels may show either LRC961 or HAF. On older cars, locations include both the drivers door jamb and the radiator support.

2002 Land-Rover Background Info

The 2002 Land-Rover Vibe

Welcome to 2002, the year Land-Rover was finding itself somewhere between a muddy bog and a high-end valet stand. It was the era of the Discovery II and the transition from the boxy P38 Range Rover to the refined L322. While the rest of the world was obsessed with "Boring Silver" and tech-focused metallics, the only color that truly mattered for a Land-Rover was the one that looked best covered in trail dust: Chawton White. It's the essential survivor. Whether it was perched on the roof of a Defender or the hood of a Freelander, this shade was the badge of the "safari" spirit, built to look as good in the Serengeti as it does in the driveway.

Paint Health Check

We are deep in The Peeling Era. By 2002, factory finishes were almost entirely basecoat-and-clearcoat setups. While that gave these rigs a showroom depth that single-stage lacquer could never touch, it came with a shelf life. After twenty-plus years in the sun, you're likely looking at "Delamination"-the technical term for when your clear coat decides to part ways with the color underneath. If your hood or roof looks like it's suffering from a bad case of sunburn with flaky, white edges, that's the clear coat failing. Once that UV protection lifts, the pigment underneath is defenseless.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 2002 paint: Seal your chips immediately before the clear lifts. On these rigs, a rock chip isn't just an eyesore; it's an entry point for moisture to get between the layers. Once water or salt gets under the edge of that clear coat, it will start to "bridge" and peel away in sheets. If you've got a chip, don't wait for a full detail. Clean the area with a solvent-based prep, dab your touch-up color, and ensure you've got a solid seal over the edges. If the clear has already started to flake, you've got to sand it back to a feathered edge before spraying, or the new coat will just lift the old stuff right off the panel.
