How to Find Your 2004 Land-Rover's Color Code

Later model Land Rovers have paint codes on the drivers door jamb. Older models usually have them under the front hood on the radiator support. Codes may appear as short alphanumeric strings like LRC961 or HAF; both can refer to the same color on one vehicle. Example: LRC961 HAF corresponds to Epsom Green Clearcoat. Labels may show either LRC961 or HAF. On older cars, locations include both the drivers door jamb and the radiator support.

2004 Land-Rover Background Info

The 2004 Land-Rover Vibe

Welcome to 2004-the year of the flip phone, the cargo pant, and the peak "Safari" aesthetic. Whether you were piloting a Discovery II on its final victory lap or stepping into the high-tech cabin of an L322 Range Rover, you were part of an era that balanced rugged utility with a sudden, desperate urge to look good in a suburban driveway. While the world was obsessed with silver and "White Gold" metallics, the real survivors-the ones that actually looked like they could handle a weekend in the bush-stuck to the classics. In our books, Chawton White is the definitive survivor of the era. It's the color that stood its ground while the trendier shades started to look like they'd spent too much time in a tanning bed.

Paint Health Check

We're firmly in the Peeling Era here, kid. By 2004, Land-Rover had fully embraced the basecoat/clearcoat system, and while it looked like a million bucks on the showroom floor, the "clear" part of that equation had a nasty habit of giving up the ghost. If your Rover has spent its life under the sun, you're likely seeing the dreaded delamination-that white, flaky "sunburn" where the clear coat starts to lift off the color underneath. These factory finishes were notoriously soft, meaning bird droppings and tree sap didn't just sit on the paint; they moved in and started rearranging the furniture. If your roof or hood looks like it's shedding its skin, don't panic-it's just the era showing its age.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 2004 paint: Seal your chips immediately before the clear lifts. Once moisture and air get under that clear coat through a tiny rock chip, the delamination spreads like a rumor at a trail meet. If you're touching up that Chawton White, make sure you prep the area with a light scuff to give the new pigment some "teeth" to grab onto. Since this is a solid color from the delamination years, you have a better shot at a seamless blend than the guys with the failing metallics-but you've got to act fast. Once the clear starts to bubble, you're not just painting anymore; you're performing an exorcism.
