How to Find Your 2005 Land-Rover's Color Code

Later model Land Rovers have paint codes on the drivers door jamb. Older models usually have them under the front hood on the radiator support. Codes may appear as short alphanumeric strings like LRC961 or HAF; both can refer to the same color on one vehicle. Example: LRC961 HAF corresponds to Epsom Green Clearcoat. Labels may show either LRC961 or HAF. On older cars, locations include both the drivers door jamb and the radiator support.

2005 Land-Rover Background Info

The 2005 Land-Rover Vibe

2005 was the year Land Rover decided to trade in the old-school ruggedness for a bit of high-tech grit. It was the dawn of the LR3 era-the truck that tried to make "square" sexy again-while the Range Rover was busy reigning supreme as the ultimate status symbol of the suburban safari. The color palette was all about that mid-2000s metallic glow. We've kept the icons that actually aged with dignity, like the safari-ready Atacama Sand Metallic and the "I definitely have a weekend house in the Cotswolds" Maya Gold Metallic. If you weren't feeling the gold rush, Chawton White was the only choice for the purists who wanted their Freelander to look like it just rolled off a UN transport plane.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the tail end of the Peeling Era. By 2005, the factory was getting good at layering clear coat over those beautiful metallics, but "good" is a relative term when you're dealing with twenty years of UV rays and trail brush. The problem here isn't oxidation-the paint underneath usually stays remarkably vibrant-it's delamination. On an LR3 or a Range Rover from this year, the clear coat on the roof and hood is likely holding on for dear life. Once a rock chip or a deep scratch breaks the seal, moisture and air get in there and start lifting that clear layer like a bad sunburn. If you see white, flaky edges around a chip, your paint is literally trying to shed its skin.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 2005 Rovers: Seal your chips immediately. In this era of paint tech, a tiny chip isn't just an eyesore; it's a gateway for clear coat failure. If you catch a stone on the highway, don't wait for the next detail. Clean the area and get some solvent-borne color and clear over it to lock those edges down. If you let the clear coat start to "bridge" or lift away from the base color, no amount of buffing will save it-you'll be looking at a full panel respray. Think of your touch-up kit as a tactical repair; you're stopping the spread before the delamination takes the whole hood.
