Lexus GS300/GS400 Paint Info
The Color Breakdown
Lexus really gave the GS300 and GS400 some personality with 25 different shades. While you'll see plenty of the executive classics like Silver Metallic and Black Onyx, they definitely "went for it" with colors like Autumn Blaze Metallic and Copper Brown Pearl. Whether your GS is a "sensible silver" or a "bold bronze," that factory finish was designed to look deep and expensive, which is why those little white rock chips stand out like a sore thumb.
What to Watch For
Before you start, you need to find your "Social Security number" for the paint. Open your driver's door and look at the jamb for a white or black sticker. Look for the letters C/TR (Color/Trim). The three digits right after that (like 1C8 or 051) are your golden ticket. Be aware: Lexus paint from this era is famously "soft." This means it's easy to scratch, but it also means it's very forgiving for a DIYer. You'll likely find the most damage on the blunt nose of the hood and the edges of the side mirrors. If you have the Black Onyx, keep an eye out for "cloudy" spots on the trunk-it's a sign the paint is thirsty for some protection.
Driveway Repair Tip
Since so many of these colors-like Diamond White Pearl or Blue Meridian-are packed with metallic flakes and pearls, they "settle" at the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen or bottle for a full 60 seconds (set a timer!) to wake up those sparkles. If you're working with a Tri-coat (the whites), the match requires patience. Instead of trying to fill a chip in one go, apply a tiny dot, let it dry for 20 minutes, and then add another. Building it up in "baby steps" is the secret to making that repair disappear into the original finish.
