How to Find Your Lexus LS400's Color Code

Lexus, manufactured by Toyota, shares many color codes. On all models, a color ID plate on the driver’s door jamb shows C/TR followed by the paint code. Example: C/TR 3P1 FA09, where 3P1 is the color code; FA09 is an interior option code. The same paint can have different names across models (e.g., 3P1: Impulse Red Metallic Clearcoat, also Red Metallic Clearcoat or Wine Metallic Clearcoat). Dealers can provide the color code via VIN.

The Color Breakdown

Lexus didn't just build a car with the LS400; they built a library. With a staggering 94 colors recorded over its lifespan, they really went for it. You'll find everything from the iconic Diamond White Pearl Tri-coat to the deep Midnight Indigo Pearl and the surprisingly bold Blackberry Pearl. Whether your car is a single-tone classic or one of the many Two-Tone variants featuring that famous lower cladding, Lexus treated every LS400 like a piece of rolling fine art.

What to Watch For

These cars were built like bank vaults, but the paint is more like fine china. Your first mission is to find your specific code: open the driver's door and look at the jamb for a sticker. You're looking for "C/TR" followed by a three-digit code (like 202 or 051). Keep in mind that on many LS400s, the body and the plastic bumpers/cladding actually use different codes, so make sure you're looking at the right spot.

Commonly, you'll see some "sunburn" (clear coat peeling) on the roof or trunk, and because Lexus used a relatively soft paint system, the hood is often a magnet for tiny rock chips. If you have the Black Onyx, be aware it's notoriously soft and shows every little mark, while the Diamond White Pearl can sometimes experience some "lifting" if a car wash gets too aggressive with the edges.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many of these colors-especially the whites and silvers-are pearls or "tri-coats," they require a little extra love. When you get your touch-up bottle, shake it for a full two minutes. The heavy "pearl" flakes like to settle at the bottom, and you want them floating evenly in the paint to get that factory glow.

When applying, resist the urge to fill a chip in one big go. The LS400 paint is all about depth. Use a tiny amount of paint and dab it into the center of the chip, letting it flow to the edges. It's better to do three paper-thin layers over an afternoon than one big "blob" that will never sit flat. If you're working on the lower plastic cladding, just remember that those parts flex, so stay patient and keep your layers light!
