How to Find Your 1996 Lincoln's Color Code

Lincoln color codes are always on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, EX PT (for Exterior Paint) appears, with the paint code located above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. Typical format: WT/M6640, though M6640 is rarely shown and typically only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Lincolns can be problematic due to same names with different codes.

1996 Lincoln Background Info

The 1996 Lincoln Vibe

In 1996, a Lincoln wasn't just a car; it was a 4,000-pound statement of success that rode like a cloud. Whether you were behind the wheel of a Town Car, a Continental, or the tech-forward Mark VIII, you were floating in the pinnacle of American luxury. Back then, the palette was all about understated elegance. We've focused our collection on the true survivors of the era: Performance White and Silver Frost Metallic. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of every executive valet stand and country club from coast to coast.

Paint Health Check

By 1996, the industry had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system. It gave that Silver Frost a metallic depth that looked a mile deep, but it ushered in what we painters call The Peeling Era. The villain of this story is "delamination." If your Lincoln spent its life parked outside, you've probably noticed the clear coat starting to flake off the hood or trunk like a bad sunburn. Once the UV rays break down the bond between the color and the clear, the top layer loses its grip. If you see white, crusty edges or "islands" of matte paint appearing on your roof, your factory finish is officially on the clock.

Restoration Tip

In this era of paint, a rock chip isn't just a cosmetic blemish-it's an invitation for disaster. Moisture and air love to sneak into those tiny craters and start prying the clear coat away from the base. **My advice:** Do not wait. Seal every chip the moment you see it to prevent the clear from lifting. If you've already got some peeling, gently sand back the loose "scales" of clear coat before applying your touch-up. Use a high-quality solvent-based clear to lock the edges down; it's the only way to stop the "slow creep" of delamination from turning your luxury cruiser into a driveway eyesore.
