How to Find Your 1997 Lincoln's Color Code

Lincoln color codes are always on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, EX PT (for Exterior Paint) appears, with the paint code located above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. Typical format: WT/M6640, though M6640 is rarely shown and typically only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Lincolns can be problematic due to same names with different codes.

1997 Lincoln Background Info

The 1997 Lincoln Vibe

Welcome to 1997. Titanic is dominating the box office, and the Lincoln Navigator has just landed like a luxury skyscraper on wheels. This was the year Lincoln finally convinced the world that a land-yacht didn't actually need water to be comfortable. While the Town Car and Continental were still holding down the executive parking lots, the Navigator was busy redefining the suburban driveway. We've focused our collection on the true survivors of this era: Oxford White, Performance White, and the quintessential Silver Frost Metallic. These colors were the unofficial uniform of the '90s elite-clean, understated, and designed to look expensive even when idling in the carpool lane.

Paint Health Check

By 1997, the industry had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but we were still smack in the middle of The Peeling Era. The "Reality Check" for these Lincolns is a nasty little phenomenon called delamination. You've likely seen it: a perfectly good Silver Frost hood that suddenly looks like it's suffering from clear coat dandruff. When the bond between the color and the clear fails, the clear coat starts flaking off in brittle sheets, leaving the basecoat exposed and defenseless against the sun. If you don't catch it early, your Navigator will go from "Showroom" to "Scrapyard" faster than you can say "dual-zone climate control."

Restoration Tip

In this era, a rock chip isn't just a cosmetic blemish; it's a breach in the hull. Once air and moisture get under the edge of the clear coat, the peeling begins and it rarely stops. Seal your chips immediately. The moment you spot a nick in that Performance White finish, use our solvent-based touch-up to bridge the gap between the base and the clear. Think of it as "gluing" the edges down. If you can keep the clear coat sealed and bonded to the panel, you'll prevent the dreaded lift-off that claims so many '97 survivors.
