How to Find Your 2001 Lincoln's Color Code

Lincoln color codes are always on the drivers door jamb. On the color plate, EX PT (for Exterior Paint) appears, with the paint code located above or below; sometimes the actual color is embossed on the plate and not where expected. Typical format: WT/M6640, though M6640 is rarely shown and typically only WT appears. WT corresponds to Performance White Clearcoat. Pre 1970 Lincolns can be problematic due to same names with different codes.

2001 Lincoln Background Info

The 2001 Lincoln Vibe

Welcome to the year of Y2K minimalism, where the 2001 Lincoln Navigator was the undisputed king of the suburban jungle. This was the era of "tuxedo luxury"-oversized leather sofas on wheels, chrome grilles that could blind a pilot, and a palette that didn't need to scream to be heard. We've focused our collection on the true survivors of this era, the colors that defined the millennium: Performance White and Silver Frost Metallic. If you were pulling up to a premiere or a high-stakes board meeting in '01, you were likely doing it in one of these two.

Paint Health Check

Now, let's talk shop. If you're looking at a 2001 Lincoln today, you're dealing with the height of "The Peeling Era." By this time, the factory had mastered the look of the clear coat, but the chemistry hadn't quite figured out how to stay bonded to the base coat for twenty-plus years of sun. We call it "Delamination." It starts as a tiny bubble or a white flake on the hood or the roof, and before you know it, the clear is lifting off like a bad sunburn. Once that clear coat fails, the Silver Frost underneath loses its soul, turning from a crisp metallic to a chalky gray mess.

Restoration Tip

The secret to saving a 2001 finish is speed. You've got to seal those rock chips immediately before the clear coat has a chance to "lift" at the edges. If you already see the clear starting to flake, don't just paint over it. You need to gently sand the edge of the failing clear coat to a "feather edge" until it's smooth to the touch. Only then should you apply your base and clear. Building up thin layers will mimic the factory depth without creating a "shelf" that invites more peeling down the road.
