If your Artic White or Pewter finish looks like it's shedding its skin, that's the clear coat failing. Once that clear layer loses its bond, it lifts in flakes, leaving the flat basecoat underneath exposed to the elements and ready to fade.

The secret to saving a 1991 finish is speed. If you spot a rock chip or a scratch in your Medium Red or Black, you have to seal it before the clear coat "lifts." In this era, moisture and air love to crawl under the broken edge of a chip and start the delamination process from the inside out. When you're touching up these colors, focus on sealing the perimeter of the chip. It's not just about hiding the metal; it's about anchoring the clear coat edges so they don't start to peel across the entire surface.
