Welcome to the Thin Paint Era. By 2015, the robots at the factory were getting a little too good at their jobs. They mastered "efficiency," which is just a fancy way of saying they applied the bare minimum amount of paint to cover the aluminum. While it looks like a mirror in the showroom, this paint is brittle and thin. On a 2015 hull, you're likely seeing "dock rash" that goes straight to the metal or, worse, the dreaded "white powder" bubbling around the rivets. That's electrolysis meeting a thin finish-once moisture gets under that robot-sprayed layer, it wants to lift the whole neighborhood.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up these 2015 rigs, you have to fight the urge to "blob" the paint to match the depth of the factory finish. Because this paint was applied so precisely (and thinly), a thick drop of touch-up will sit on top like a sore thumb. Build your layers slowly.
