Welcome to the Thin Paint Era. Back in my day, we sprayed paint thick enough to stop a bullet, but by 2021, the robots at the factory were tuned for "maximum efficiency." That means your Lund has a beautiful, high-gloss finish, but the layer is leaner than a late-season walleye. The biggest enemy for this year isn't oxidation-it's "Robot Efficiency." Because the factory coats are so thin, your hull is highly susceptible to "dock rash" and scuffs from trailer bunks. If you've been using a travel cover, you've likely noticed the paint starting to ghost or scuff where the straps rub. It looks great, but it's fragile, and once you nick it, the aluminum is exposed to the elements faster than you can bait a hook.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a 2021, you have to respect the robot's work: Build your layers slowly; don't blob it. Since these are modern, high-solid finishes-especially the colors like Charcoal and Medium Gray that require a catalyzed spray-you can't just slap on a thick coat and expect it to level out. If you try to fill a chip in one go, you'll end up with a "volcano" effect that sticks out like a sore thumb. Apply 3 to 4 light, misty passes, allowing each to flash off. This builds the "mils" (thickness) back up to factory specs without creating a mess.
