They figured out how to stretch a gallon of clear coat across a dozen cars, leaving your Maserati with a finish that's gorgeous but has the skin of a grape. The main conflict here isn't oxidation-it's impact. Because the factory coats are so thin, a single pebble on the autostrada can punch right through the Nero Carbonio Metallic and reach the primer. You'll also likely see "sandblasting" on the lower rockers and behind the wheel arches where the road has literally chewed through the thin clear coat over the last decade and a half.

Restoration Tip

When you're fixing chips on these "Thin Era" beauties, build your layers slowly; don't blob it. If you try to fill a deep chip in Grigio Granito with one thick drop of paint, it'll shrink, sink, and look like a crater. Instead, use a fine-tipped brush or a toothpick to apply two or three paper-thin layers of color, letting them dry in between. Once you've leveled the color, apply the clear coat just slightly proud of the surface. Give it a day to cure, then use a high-grit finishing paper (2000 or 3000 grit) to level it flat. The key is to mimic the robot's precision, not a house painter's haste.
