How to Find Your Mazda RX7's Color Code

Mazda color codes are normally on the drivers door jamb; some models hide them in the engine compartment. If not on the drivers door jamb, finding the code may take extra work. Codes are typically two or three digits, made of numbers and letters. Example: 21R. 21R is called Moonlight Gray Metallic Clearcoat in one naming, Grey Clearcoat by another name, or Moonstone Clearcoat by another name. Marketing may change the color name.

The Color Breakdown

Mazda really went for it with the RX-7, recording a staggering 54 different colors across its legendary run. Whether your car is wearing the high-voltage Competition Yellow Tri-Coat Pearl, the moody Mach Green Metallic, or the iconic Vintage Red, you're driving a piece of rolling art. With a palette that ranges from "Space Yellow" to "Havana Brown," it's clear the designers wanted these cars to stand out as much for their finish as they did for that screaming rotary engine.

What to Watch For

While the RX-7 is a masterpiece, its paint is famously "lean"-which is just a nice way of saying Mazda kept the layers thin to save weight. Because that rotary engine under the hood likes to run hot, the hood is a major "hot zone" for clear coat fading or small cracks. You should also keep an eye on the door handles and the roof; the paint there tends to get tired from sun exposure.

To get started, you'll need your paint code. On most 1986-2002 models (FC and FD), you'll find it on a sticker inside the driver's side door jamb. If you're rocking a first-gen (SA/FB), pop the hood and look for a metal identification plate riveted to the firewall. It'll have a two- or three-character code like "SQ" or "UC."

Driveway Repair Tip

If you are working with one of Mazda's famous tri-coats or pearls, like Competition Yellow or Vintage Red, remember that these colors are built in "stages." Don't try to fill a deep chip in one go. Instead of using the brush that comes in the cap-which usually holds too much paint-grab a wooden toothpick. Dab a tiny amount of paint onto the tip and build the color up in three or four paper-thin layers, waiting 15 minutes between each. This helps those metallic flakes or pearl pigments lay down flat so they catch the light just right, rather than looking like a dark blob. Patience is your best friend here!
