How to Find Your Mazda Tribute's Color Code

Mazda color codes are normally on the drivers door jamb; some models hide them in the engine compartment. If not on the drivers door jamb, finding the code may take extra work. Codes are typically two or three digits, made of numbers and letters. Example: 21R. 21R is called Moonlight Gray Metallic Clearcoat in one naming, Grey Clearcoat by another name, or Moonstone Clearcoat by another name. Marketing may change the color name.

The Color Breakdown

Mazda really went for it with the Tribute. With 65 recorded colors, they didn't just stick to the standard grayscale script. We're talking about a palette that ranges from the adventurous Kiwi Green Metallic and Blazing Copper Pearl to the sophisticated Mizu Blue Metallic. Whether your Tribute looks like it's ready for a safari or a trip to the office, Mazda provided a shade for every personality-and a lot of metallic flakes to keep things interesting.

What to Watch For

Before you start, pop the driver's side door. You're looking for a sticker on the jamb-that's where your paint code lives. If it's not there, don't panic; some early models hide it on the firewall under the hood. Now, the Tribute shares some DNA with its Ford cousins, which means the paint can be a bit sensitive. Keep a close eye on the leading edge of the hood and the area around the rear tailgate. These spots are magnet for chips, and because the factory clear coat is on the thinner side, those little nicks can turn into "sunburn" (peeling) if left alone. If you have the two-tone look with plastic cladding-like Medium Gray on the bottom-make sure you're matching the right part of the car!

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many of these colors are "Metallic" or "Pearl," you have to treat your touch-up bottle like a protein shake. Those tiny sparkles love to settle at the bottom, so shake that bottle for a full two minutes before you open it. When you're ready to apply, remember: you are a surgeon, not a house painter. Use the tip of the brush or pen to dab the paint *into* the chip rather than wiping it across. If the chip is deep, do one thin layer, let it dry for 20 minutes, and then go back for round two. It requires a little patience, but building it up slowly is the secret to a repair that looks flat and professional instead of a lumpy "paint mountain" on your fender.
