Here's the reality from the spray booth: we are firmly in the Thin Paint Era. Back in the day, you could practically sand a Mercedes with a brick and still find paint underneath. By 2020, the robots at the factory got a little too good at their jobs. They apply these coats with such efficiency that the total thickness is often thinner than a human hair. While that Graphite Grey Pearl looks stunning, the clear coat is quite brittle. Owners are finding that rock chips don't just dent the paint; they "star" it-cracking the clear like an eggshell. Restoration Tip

Because these factory finishes are applied so thinly, you have to be the surgeon, not the butcher. When you're touching up a chip in your Digital White or Obsidian Black, do not-I repeat, do not-try to fill the hole in one heavy blob. The modern clear coat is hard and doesn't like to "melt" into old layers. Instead, build your repair in thin, whisper-light layers. Use a fine-tipped brush or even a toothpick to drop the paint into the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. If you over-apply and try to buff it flat later, you'll realize very quickly that there isn't much factory clear coat around the repair to spare. Build it slow, keep it level, and you'll keep that 2020 shine without sanding through to the primer.
