Mercedes-Benz C Series Paint Info
The Color Breakdown
Mercedes-Benz didn't play it safe with the C Series; they really went for it. With 33 colors recorded, we're looking at everything from the mysterious Black Opal Pearl to the vibrant Calypso Green Metallic and the regal Bordeaux Red Metallic. Whether you're driving a "Smoke Silver" classic or a modern "Obsidian Black" cruiser, you're dealing with high-quality German pigments that were designed to look like they're an inch deep.
What to Watch For
Before you start, you need your "secret recipe" number. On most C Series models, you'll find the 3-digit paint code on a sticker inside the driver's side door jamb or stamped onto a metal plate on the radiator support bar (that's the metal frame right behind the grille when you pop the hood).
Now, for the reality check: Mercedes clear coats-especially on older models or the notorious "Mars Red"-can sometimes decide to part ways with the car. Keep a close eye on your hood and the edges of your trunk. If you see white, flaky edges around a chip, that's the clear coat losing its grip. Don't worry, though; catching a chip early with a touch-up pen is exactly how you stop a small flake from becoming a big flake.
Driveway Repair Tip
Since so many C Series colors are "Pearls" or "Metallics," they have tiny flakes of mica or aluminum floating in the paint. If you don't shake that touch-up bottle for at least 60 seconds (set a timer, your arm should get tired!), those sparkles will stay at the bottom and your repair will look too dark.
When applying, think "less is more." Use the tip of the applicator to drop a tiny dot of paint into the center of the chip and let it spread out to the edges. It's much easier to add a second thin layer after 20 minutes than it is to deal with a giant, gloopy mountain of paint that takes three days to dry!
