How to Find Your Mercedes-Benz CL-Class's Color Code

Mercedes-Benz used to place paint color codes in various locations. Recent models have the code on the driver's door jamb. On older models the code can be hard to find; location and format vary by year or model and may require searching multiple tags. Most codes are three-digit and numeric only. On the color ID tag, the code appears as the fourth group of numbers at the top. Example: 373 corresponds to Atlantic Blue; names typically stay consistent across models.

The Color Breakdown

Mercedes-Benz clearly decided that "variety is the spice of life" when they engineered the CL Class, recording a staggering 75 different colors for this model. They really went for it, offering everything from the sophisticated Espresso Pearl and Mocca Black Metallic to the surprisingly bold Citron Green Metallic. Whether your car is wearing a classic Brilliant Silver or one of the elusive "Designo" shades, you're driving a rolling piece of art that was never meant to blend into the background.

What to Watch For

Before you pop the cap on your touch-up bottle, you need to find your "DNA code." On the CL Class, your paint code is usually hiding on a sticker inside the driver's side door jamb. If you don't see it there, pop the hood and look for a metal plate on the radiator support bar (the "slam panel").

One thing to keep an eye on: the CL Class often features a high-tech "ceramic" clear coat. It's tough stuff, but on horizontal surfaces like the roof and trunk lid, it can occasionally get brittle or begin to peel if it's spent too many years baking in the sun. If you see tiny bubbles or "blistering," it just means the surface needs a little extra cleaning with some rubbing alcohol to ensure your new paint sticks for the long haul.

Driveway Repair Tip

Because so many CL Class colors-like Black Diamond Metallic or Mystic White Pearl-are packed with heavy metallic flakes and pearls, they require a bit of patience to get right.

Shake that bottle like it owes you money. I'm talking a full 60 to 90 seconds. Those heavy metallic particles love to settle at the bottom, and you need them swimming in the paint to get a match. When you apply it, think "thin and light." Use the very tip of your brush or pen to fill the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. It's much easier to add a second tiny layer later than it is to deal with one giant, gloopy mountain of paint on your hood!
