Mercedes-Benz didn't hold back with the CLS-Coupe, giving us a massive library of 60 recorded colors. While it often feels like they were aiming for "50 Shades of Silver" with choices like Iridium Silver Metallic and Diamond Silver Metallic, they definitely "went for it" with some of the moodier tones. If you're driving a Mocca Black Metallic or a Rubellite Red Metallic, you've got a car that changes its personality depending on whether it's under a streetlamp or the afternoon sun.

What to Watch For

First things first: pop the driver's door and look at the jamb for your 3-digit paint code. If it's not there, check the radiator support bar under the hood. On the CLS, the clear coat is generally high-quality, but it has a known habit of losing its grip on the bonnet and wings if a stone chip is left untreated. These sleek, sloping lines are magnet for road debris, and once the seal is broken, the clear coat can start to lift. If you see a tiny "white edge" around a chip, that's your signal to act before it grows.

Many of these colors-especially the Designo series and the Diamond White Tricoat-use heavy metallic or pearl pigments that like to settle at the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen or brush for a full two minutes (play a song, get a workout in) to wake up those sparkles. When applying, resist the urge to fill the chip in one go. Apply a thin layer, let it dry for 15 minutes, and then add another. These high-end finishes require patience to build up the depth, but taking it slow is the secret to making that repair disappear into the curve of the bodywork.
