How to Find Your Mini One's Color Code

Mini color codes follow BMW paint code conventions and are hidden somewhere on the car, often on several panels. Common locations include the firewall and radiator support; they can also be on the door jamb or inside the trunk. Finding the code often requires patience, and if not found, multiple locations may need checking. The color code is necessary to order matching paint, and the numeric code, rather than only the color name, is recorded.

The Color Breakdown

Mini didn't just make a car; they made a fashion statement on wheels. With 26 recorded colors, they really went for it. From the iconic Pepper White and Chili Red to the more adventurous Black-Eye Purple Metallic and Liquid Yellow, there is a shade for every personality. Whether your Mini is a classic British Racing Green or the bold Hot Orange Metallic, it's clear the designers weren't afraid to have some fun with the palette.

What to Watch For

Before you start your repair, you'll need your 3-digit paint code. Pop the hood and look at the passenger side strut tower (the metal mound where the suspension connects) or the firewall near the back of the engine. Mini paint looks fantastic, but its upright "bulldog" face makes it a magnet for stone chips on the hood. You might also notice the clear coat starting to lift or peel around the edges of those chips or near the roofline. Don't panic-this is a common quirk of the Gen 1 and Gen 2 models. Catching these spots early with a touch-up kit is the best way to keep that "mini" problem from becoming a big one.

Driveway Repair Tip

When you're working with a touch-up brush, the "less is more" rule is your best friend. Instead of trying to fill a deep chip with one giant glob, apply two or three very thin layers, letting each one dry for about 20 minutes. If you're working with one of those gorgeous metallics like Astro Black or Hyper Blue, shake your bottle for a full two minutes-those tiny metallic flakes like to settle at the bottom, and you need them "awake" to get the right shimmer. Once your color is dry, dab a tiny bit of clear coat over the top to seal the edges; this acts like a bandage that keeps the rest of the paint from deciding to peel away.
