2002 Peugeot Background Info
The 2002 Peugeot Vibe
Welcome to 2002-the year of low-rise jeans, the 206 dominating the World Rally Championship, and the massive, swept-back headlights of the then-new 307. Peugeot was leaning hard into that "smiling" front-end aesthetic. While the factory floors were pumping out a rainbow of options, we've focused our vault on the true survivors of the era. If you're looking at a Peugeot from this vintage, it's almost guaranteed to be wearing Aluminium Grey Metallic-the official color of the early 2000s-or the deep, moody Blue China that made even a base-model 406 look like it belonged in a diplomat's driveway.
Paint Health Check
We are deep in the "Peeling Era" here, kid. Peugeot was using a two-stage basecoat and clearcoat system that looked brilliant on the showroom floor, but it hasn't always aged gracefully under the sun. The big enemy is delamination. You'll know it when you see it: the clear coat starts looking like a snake shedding its skin, usually starting on the roof or the hood where the UV rays hit hardest. Once that clear layer loses its bond with the Blue China or Aluminium Grey base underneath, moisture creeps in, and it's game over for the finish. If your Pug still has its shine, count your lucky stars and keep it that way.
Restoration Tip
The secret to keeping these French beauties from balding is speed. In this era, the clear coat is the only thing protecting your color; if you let a stone chip sit, air and water will wedge themselves between the layers and start "lifting" the clear from the edges of the wound. Seal chips immediately. Don't wait for the weekend. Dab your touch-up color into the chip to level it, and then get that clear coat on top of it to lock the edges down. If you stop the air from getting under the clear, you stop the peel before it starts.
