How to Find Your 1992 Plymouth's Color Code

Plymouth paint codes were often hidden on top of the radiator support, hard to spot under engine grease and oil. Later models started putting them on the drivers door jamb. Typical code format appears as BS/GBS, but only the BS is the color code; variants like QBS, PBS, TBS may appear. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat. The G in GBS is not part of the code, and newer listings may simply show BS.

1992 Plymouth Background Info

The 1992 Plymouth Vibe

Welcome to 1992, the year the Voyager was essentially the national bird of the American suburbs and the Plymouth Laser was out there trying to convince everyone it was a fighter jet. While the early '90s were flirting with some pretty loud teals and purples, our records show the survivor that really mattered was Black Crystal. It's a deep, brooding shade that made the family van look like a government transport and turned the Laser into a midnight shadow. If you've still got one of these on the road, it's a time capsule of an era when Plymouth was still trying to balance "sensible" with "sporty."

Paint Health Check

You're smack in the middle of The Peeling Era. Back in '92, the industry was leaning hard into basecoat/clearcoat systems, but the bond between the two wasn't always a happy marriage. Chrysler products from this window are notorious for "sunburn"-that lovely stage where the clear coat decides to stop being a protective layer and starts peeling off in giant, translucent flakes. Darker shades like Black Crystal act as a heat sink, baking that clear coat from the inside out until it delaminates. If your roof or hood looks like it's molting, you're dealing with classic clear coat failure.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for this era: Seal your chips immediately before the clear lifts. On a 1992 Plymouth, a tiny rock chip isn't just a cosmetic blemish; it's an entry point for moisture. Once water gets under that clear layer, it'll start to tunnel, lifting the clear away from the Black Crystal basecoat like a bad sticker. Use an exact-match touch-up to bridge that gap and keep the edges of the clear coat locked down. If you catch it early, you can stop the "peel" before your Voyager starts looking like a map of the moon.
