How to Find Your 1996 Plymouth's Color Code

Plymouth paint codes were often hidden on top of the radiator support, hard to spot under engine grease and oil. Later models started putting them on the drivers door jamb. Typical code format appears as BS/GBS, but only the BS is the color code; variants like QBS, PBS, TBS may appear. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat. The G in GBS is not part of the code, and newer listings may simply show BS.

1996 Plymouth Background Info

The 1996 Plymouth Vibe

Welcome to 1996, the year Plymouth went all-in on the "bubble" look. If you weren't hauling a travel soccer team in a redesigned Voyager, you were likely watching the brand try to find its footing with the Neon. While the 90s loved its teals and jades, we've focused our vault on the true survivors: Black Crystal and Stone White. These were the workhorse colors-the ones that didn't just scream "90s mall parking lot" but actually looked decent under a streetlamp. In '96, if you weren't driving a Stone White van, did you even have kids?

Paint Health Check

We are deep in The Peeling Era now, kid. By 1996, the factory had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the chemistry was... let's call it "experimental." If your Plymouth has spent its life outside, you're likely dealing with delamination. That's the fancy word for when the clear coat decides it's had enough of the basecoat and starts flaking off like a bad sunburn. On these mid-90s Mopar bodies, the roof and hood are usually the first to go. If you see white, chalky edges around a chip, that clear coat is already looking for the exit.

Restoration Tip

Since you're dealing with a clear coat that's prone to lifting, you can't just dab on some color and walk away. Seal your chips immediately. If you leave an open wound in the paint, moisture and air will crawl under the edge of the clear coat and start prying it up from the inside out. When you're doing a repair, make sure to gently feather the edges of the remaining clear with a fine abrasive so your new layer can actually bite. If you don't anchor that edge, you're just painting a bridge that's destined to collapse.
