1991 Pontiac Background Info
The 1991 Pontiac Vibe
Welcome to 1991-the year of pop-up headlights, plastic body cladding, and the peak of the "Excitement" era. Whether you were tossing a Sunrunner into a tight parking spot or trying to make a LeMans look fast at a stoplight, Pontiac was all about that bold, aerodynamic look. In our database, we've focused on the two absolute survivors of the era: Black and White. While the 90s tried to push teals and magentas on us, these are the classic shades that actually stood the test of time while the neon fads faded away.
Paint Health Check
We are firmly in the Peeling Era here. By 1991, GM had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the chemistry was still a bit... experimental. If your Pontiac has spent any time in the sun, you're likely dealing with delamination. This is where the clear coat decides it's had enough of the base coat and starts flaking off in white, parchment-like sheets. It usually starts on the hood or the roof, and once that clear lifts, the pigment underneath is defenseless. If you see "clouding" or white flakes, your clear coat is waving the white flag.
Restoration Tip
When you're dealing with 1991 factory clear, your biggest enemy is "The Spread." If you have a small rock chip, do not wait. Seal those chips immediately. Once moisture and air get under the edge of the clear coat, it acts like a lever, peeling the finish back further every time you wash the car or drive in the wind. Sand the edges of the chip lightly with fine-grit paper to "feather" the transition, then apply your touch-up color and a fresh seal. You want to lock that edge down before your roof looks like a sunburned tourist in July.
