How to Find Your Porsche Special Colors's Color Code

Porsche paint codes are often hard to find. They are usually near the spare tire area, printed on a paper color ID tag that may fall off with time. The owner's manual for some models sometimes lists paint codes. Porsche uses the same color across different models, and the same code may appear under different color names. Codes can be four characters starting with L or three characters, using letters and numbers.

The Color Breakdown

Porsche has a bit of a dual personality when it comes to their palette. Out of the 10 recorded special colors, they've given us the "CEO in a Suit" look with five different shades of sophisticated gray-like Seal Gray Metallic, Titanium Metallic, and the iconic Polar Silver Metallic. But then, it's like the designers had a wild weekend and gave us the "Look at Me" colors like the vibrant Ruby Red Metallic and the "I've arrived" glow of Nordic Gold Metallic. Whether you're driving a stealthy Slate Gray or a shimmering Lapis Blue Pearl, these colors were designed to catch the light and the envy of everyone at the stoplight.

What to Watch For

First, you have to find your paint code, and Porsche likes to play hide-and-seek. Your first stop should be the "frunk" (front trunk)-check under the lid or pull back the carpet on the side walls for a white paper sticker. If it's not there, check the driver's side door jamb or the first page of your service booklet. Look for a code like "LM7W" or "92U." Now, for the reality check: Porsche uses a relatively soft clear coat. While it looks like glass, it's a bit of a magnet for rock chips on that low-slung nose and "tiger stripe" marks on the roof from old car covers or transit film. Keep an eye on the leading edges of your hood; that's where the road usually tries to take a bite out of your Dark Teal Metallic.

Driveway Repair Tip

Because these colors are heavy on metallics and pearls (looking at you, Prosecco Metallic), those tiny flakes like to settle at the bottom of the bottle. Before you even open your touch-up pen, shake it for a full two minutes-long after you think you're done. When applying, do not use long brush strokes. Instead, use a "dabbing" motion to fill the chip. These sophisticated pigments require patience to get the flake orientation just right. If you're working with a pearl color, applying two very thin layers will look much better than one big, dark blob. Think of it like salt on a pretzel: a little bit at a time gives you the perfect finish.
